Position Purpose

As a member of the IT Networking Team, this person manages and maintains Unitil’s IT/OT networks. At times, this may include planning and developing solutions for critical infrastructure initiatives, that create and maintain a vision for all network infrastructure. In addition, this role provides high-level technical guidance and support for the enterprise network structure, under general supervision.

Key responsibilities including but not limited to:

Implement functional network infrastructure and systems using correct network diagrams and documentation
Analyze and confirm the information demands and functional requirements in collaboration with internal staff, as well as external vendors and/or contractors
Adopt network security measures after organizing, planning, and safeguarding data, software, and hardware
Provide technical guidance to teams working on deployment and support
Ensure the stability of the working environment before, during, and after system updates
Establish and maintain strong cross-functional working connections, with internal and external stakeholders/partners
Resolve issues escalated by lower support tiers and provide support for those tiers as needed
Configure firewalls, routing, and switching to maximize network security and efficiency
Utilize online resources and documentation, as well as vendors/partners, to gain knowledge about new or unfamiliar technology

Network & Platform Oversight and Design:

Ensuring operational performance of production network systems and equipment, across all IT and OT environments
Monitor network performance to identify necessary adjustments and improvements

Relationship Management:

Manage day to day work activity, as well as third-party network vendors and/or contractors

Security & Compliance Support:

Responsible for the security of the company’s network infrastructure, electronic data, redundancy failover systems, and networks including Industrial Control Systems.
Ensure department compliance with all Unitil policies and procedures including change control, identity and access management, vulnerability management and patching SLAs.
Ensuring department compliance with CIS (Center for Internet Security) critical security controls, which define essential cyber hygiene and minimum standards for enterprise information security, and the periodic audit of these controls.
Facilitate response to cyber risks, such as applying critical patches, penetration test remediation, and responding to industry cyber alerts.

Participate in periodic assessments (Cybersecurity Capability Maturity Model, Culture of Security, etc.), as well as active and tabletop cyber exercises (Cyber Yankee, GridEx).

Qualifications for a Network Engineer

Bachelor of Science degree or equivalent.
Minimum of 5 years progressively responsible experience in multiple IT disciplines. 1-3 years experience in architecting and supporting enterprise networks.
Recent experience in monitoring, detecting and remediating cyber events. Ability to lead and contribute in the event of a cyber incident.
Excellent written and verbal communication, strong technical and analytical ability.

Qualifications for a Sr. Network Engineer

Bachelor of Science in an IT or Computer Science related discipline
Cisco CCNA or CCNP (preferred)
7+ years of experience as a network engineer
5+ years of experience with firewalls and network security mechanisms
3+ years of experience in network segmentation, URL filtering, and dynamic routing
Knowledge of network hardware and equipment, and enterprise-level networking
Knowledge of major network routing protocols, including dynamic routing
Experience with a variety of firewall vendors/models
Ability to work independently, and as part of a team, in a fast-paced workplace
Strong verbal and written communication skills Ability to contribute in the event of a cyber incident
Working knowledge of OT/SCADA/ICS designs and concepts is a plus
Proficient with software (e.g. Microsoft Visio) to diagram network configurations
