 Unit Highlights

Patients treated on this unit commonly present with the same disease processes seen on the medical and intermediate care units but are considered critically ill due to the monitoring they require, and/or their acuity of illness. The Intensive Care Center (ICC) at Medstar St. Mary’s Hospital is not a specialized unit, meaning that a variety of disease processes are seen, including but not limited to: vascular surgery, orthopedic and non-orthopedic general surgery, NSTEMI, sepsis, shock (hypovolemic, septic, and cardiogenic), stroke (including patients who have received thrombolytic therapy), respiratory compromise or failure, renal failure (including those requiring continuous renal replacement therapy), and heart failure. Patients that are admitted to MedStar St. Mary’s hospital requiring mechanical ventilation and titration of critically ill medications will typically receive nursing care in the ICC. We receive patients from the emergency department, medical floors, and directly from the OR/PACU. The ICC will also take medical overflow patients, based on the needs of the hospital. Number of beds: 12; Nurse to Patient Ratio: 1:2 (ICC)

Key Responsibilities

As a Clinical Nurse you will deliver proficient nursing care to patients and families whose needs range from uncomplicated to highly complex. You will identify current and potential complex problems of specific patient populations and critically analyzes trends and changes in patient status and plans appropriate interventions directly or indirectly through other nurses.

Qualifications

  • ADN, BSN, MSN, or CNL from an accredited School of Nursing required.
  • Prior Clinical Nursing Experience preferred.
  • Active MD RN License or Active Compact State RN and Basic Life Support for Healthcare providers required.
